في سبتمبر 2008، كانت شركة صواريخ صغيرة على وشك الإفلاس. وبعد ثلاث عمليات إطلاق فاشلة سابقة، لم يتبق لديها التمويل الكافي لمواصلة العمليات إد إنفجر صاروخها الرابع أيضًا. في الوقت نفسه، كانت الشركة الأخرى التي يديرها الرئيس التنفيذي، وهي شركة ناشئة للسيارات الكهربائي، في ضائقة مالية رهيبة مثيلة وتكافح من أجل العثور على التمويل للبقاء واقفة على قدميها حيث حاولت بيع أول منتوج لها والإستثمار في المزيد من البحث والتطوير خلال أزمة مالية عالمية. لكن الرئيس التنفيذي للشركتين، وهو مهاجر شاب من جنوب إفريقيا، رفض الاستسلام. تم إطلاق صاروخه الرابع "فالكون 1" بنجاح وتمت مكافأته بعقد قيمته 1.5 مليار دولار من وكالة ناسا. بعد أيام فقط، تلقت سيارته الكهربائية إستثمارا خاصا قيمته 50 مليون دولار .

بعد التغلب على الإخفاقات المتكررة والعديد من النقاد، واصل "إلون ماسك" الإبتكار والمضي قدمًا برؤيته. وهو الآن خامس أغنى شخص في العالم، حيث تبلغ ثروته حوالي 91 مليار دولار ويبلغ رقم أعمال تسلا الآن أكثر من من أرقام أعمال ثلاث شركات سيارات تليها في العالم - تويوتا وفولكسفاغن وهوندا - مجتمعة. أصبحت "سبايس أكس" أول شركة خاصة ترسل بشرًا إلى الفضاء في وقت سابق من هذا العام.

After three previous failed launches, it did not have sufficient funding left to continue operations if its fourth rocket also exploded. At the same time, its CEO’s second company, an electric car startup, was in similarly dire financial straits, struggling to find the funding to stay afloat, as it tried to sell its first product and invest in more research and development during an unfolding global financial crisis. But the CEO of the two companies, a young immigrant from South Africa, refused to give up. His fourth rocket, Falcon 1, successfully launched into orbit, and was rewarded with a $1.5 billion contract from NASA. Only days later, his electric car received a lifeline of $50 million in private investment.     

Overcoming repeated failures and many critics, Elon Musk continued innovating and pushing forward with his vision. He is now the fifth richest person in the world, worth some $91 billion, and Tesla is now worth more than the three next-largest automobile companies in the world -- Toyota, Volkswagen, and Honda -- combined. SpaceX became the first private company to send humans into space earlier this year.
